Apprenticeships

Case Study - Megan Armitage

Words by Sarah Wraith

Megan-ArmitageMegan started my group on the Diploma in Children and Young people’s workforce on 6th September 2011. Megan was a school leaver who wanted to pursue a role in childcare. Megan started the course and during training sessions was a positive member of the group.

Megan undertook a placement at Little Rascals Day Nursery while she was undertaking her qualification. Megan was a positive role model for the children and showed a caring/professional attitude.

Megan was very committed to her course and when needed she attended additional days to research and do professional discussion with me. Megan became very confident with professional discussion and this helped her to progress more quickly through her qualification.

Due to her commitment Megan finished her course work earlier than her expected end date. I asked her if she would like to do some learner support within the centre for her remaining time on the programme to give her some experience working with a different age group.

Megan agreed to this and started spending her college day in the 14-16 childcare area at Sheaf. During this time Megan supported the learners using her childcare background. The 14-16 tutor gave me feedback from learners that Megan was a role model and an inspiration.

From this enrichment experience and on completing her course Megan expressed to me that she would like to continue the class room support work she had started at Sheaf. I spoke to my line manager about Megan becoming a class room support person within the centre. Megan contacted the appropriate agency and has since become a regular support person at Sheaf working with a variety of young people with a range of support needs.
