What are apprenticeships?

They are government supported work based training programmes that allow business to develop a skilled and qualified workforce.


They are a cost affective work-based training programme designed around the needs of employers, which lead to nationally recognised qualifications.


As employees, apprentices earn a wage and work alongside experienced staff to gain job-specific skills.

Apprenticeships are for employers who want a qualified, skilled and loyal workforce.

An apprentice is typically a fulltime employee who takes part in on the job training, with day release to a learning environment, dependent on the sector and qualification. They ordinarily take between 12 and 24 months to complete.

Apprentices complete a learning framework at level 2 or 3, usually consisting of a competence qualification, a knowledge qualification along with maths, English and ICT functional skills. Other skills or training may be required to suit a particular occupational area.

Apprenticeships can be used to employ new staff as well as developing current employees.
Apprenticeships ensure you have an up-to-date well trained and qualified workforce. They help address skill shortages, productivity along with enhancing the reputation of your organisation.

Apprenticeships provide real, measurable business benefits for employers. They bring productive, enthusiastic and loyal people into your organisation and demonstrate your commitment to investing in your people to customers and suppliers.


There are real business benefits to taking on apprentices:


  • Apprentices increase productivity and efficiency. 80% of those who employ apprentices agree that they make the workplace more productive.
  • Apprentices are loyal and hardworking and help businesses grow. 88% of employers who employ apprentices believe that Apprenticeships lead to a more motivated and satisfied workforce.
  • 83% of employers who employ apprentices rely on their Apprenticeships programme to provide the skilled workers that they need for the future
  • 81% of consumers would prefer to use a company that employs apprentices.

The Apprenticeship programme has been designed to help your employees reach a high level of competency and performance and with nearly 200 different types of Apprenticeship, there’s bound to be a place for an apprentice in your organisation.


What will it cost me?

The Skills funding Agency provides funding to cover the cost of the Apprenticeship framework for all 16-18 year olds. However funding is reduced for Apprentices aged 19+.

Apprentices aged 18 years of age and under must be paid a minimum of £3.30 per hour. For apprentices aged 19 years old or above and have completed the first year of their apprenticeship, you must pay the full minimum wage for their age.

Apprenticeship AGE grants are available to small to medium sized employers recruiting 16 to 24 year olds. This Grant for Employers with a value of £1,500 is aimed at eligible employers to assist when recruiting young people.

The “Sheffield 100 Apprenticeship Programme” aims to encourage young people aged between 16 and 18 years old who may not have been successful in the past at gaining an apprenticeship, or are most likely to fall out of education, employment or training and in need of support.

The businesses that support Sheffield’s young people through this programme will be able to claim a wage subsidy of £1.30 per hour.

Our centres are well equipped training environments that offer apprenticeships in a range of vocations. We have tutors with the expertise to develop programmes to meet the differing needs of individual employers, along with qualified support staff to develop students up to the level of English, Maths and ICT required by the qualification framework.

We support employers to recruit the right person to meet their business need.

Sheaf Training is equipped to offer training in childcare and health and social care in our specialised training suits along with hospitality in our fully working kitchen environment. Teaching assistant apprenticeships are available along with horticulture.


Red Tape Central has industry-standard music recording facilities, along with excellent ICT facilities and experienced staff to deliver business administration and customer service apprenticeships.

The Construction Design Centre offers a range of construction apprenticeships including: painting and decorating, joinery, and civil engineering.


The Sheffield Engineering Centre provides apprentices with state-of-the-art equipment, industry standard technology and access to leading experts from the sector to support their vocational development.
