Apprenticeships

What are apprenticeships?

As part of Sheffield City Council we have a proud tradition of employing and training apprentices. We also offer this service to local employers in and around the Sheffield area looking to either recruit new apprentices or train existing staff. Apprenticeships are a cost effective government supported training programme for employers designed around their specific needs to help enable an increasingly skilled and qualified workforce.

As employees, apprentices earn a wage and work alongside experienced staff to gain job-specific skills and nationally recognised qualifications. Apprenticeships are for employers who want a qualified, skilled and loyal workforce.

An apprentice is typically a fulltime employee who takes part in on the job training, with 20% of their paid employment time being spent on this training. At Level 2 and Level 3 each apprenticeship will ordinarily take between 12 and 24 months to complete depending on the vocational area being studied.

Apprenticeships can be used to employ new staff as well as developing existing employees in a vocational areas from Level 2 (GCSE standard) to Level 7 (Masters standard). Apprenticeships ensure employers have an up-to-date well trained and qualified workforce. They help address skill shortages, productivity along with enhancing organisational reputation.

Our Training Centre:

CDC Training is an apprenticeship centre wholly owned by Sheffield City Council and recently rated "Good" by OFSTED. It provides apprenticeship training for a wide range of employers across the Sheffield City Region including delivering all of Sheffield City Council's apprenticeship programmes.

As a Council service, the apprenticeship offer is unique as it supports the Corporate Plan to create thriving neighbourhoods and communities, tackle inequalities whilst boosting the economy.

As such we will help any young person that wants to look for an apprenticeship and put them forward for vacancies, help with writing CVs and provide short employability courses with work experience, leading to guaranteed interviews.

Our centre is at Manor Lane next to the Kier site, 1 mile from the City Centre, a 15 minute walk from Sheffield train station and has a tram stop.

The centre has recently been refurbished and has a number of bright classrooms, fully kitted out with IT equipment and interactive whiteboards. It also has some specialist workshops for bricklayers, painters, roofers and carpentry.

Our June 2017 OFSTED inspection stated "Tutors and assessors develop positive and constructive relationships with employers which results in good apprenticeships and stimulating work experience opportunities. Consequently, apprentices and learners develop good practical and work related skills"

· Assistance with recruiting your apprentice

· Support suitable for all types of businesses

· Bespoke training to suit the needs of your business

· The opportunity for your apprentice to achieve a recognised qualification

· Flexible training, delivered in your workplace or through traditional day release

· Ongoing support as and when required.

· Access to wage support Grants.

Recruiting an apprentice can have many other benefits for your business. A national study has suggested 96% of employers who have taken on apprentices have said that it has benefited their business and 72% of employers said hiring an apprentice has helped to boost productivity in their business.

There can be financial benefits for your business too. When businesses recruit an apprentice aged between 16-18, in many cases training is provided at no cost to the employer and your business may also benefit from Grants to help cover the costs to your business.

If an organisation has a payroll of over £3M, your apprenticeship levy will fund the course. If an organisation does not pay the apprenticeship levy they will need to fund 10% of the cost of the apprenticeship and the Government will fund 90%. If an organisation has less than 50 staff and is training someone aged 16 to 18 (at the start of the apprenticeship programme) the Government will fund 100% of the training cost.

In all instances the employer must pay the wages of the person training in-line with Government guidelines. Apprentices aged 18 years of age and under must be paid a minimum of £3.70 per hour. For apprentices aged 19 years old or above and have completed the first year of their apprenticeship, must be paid at least National Minimum Wage for their age. Wage support Grants are available in certain circumstances which we will be happy to explain in more detail.

Sheffield City Council currently have a 79% apprenticeship success rate of which 81% go into employment.
